The Question That Brought You Here
You have probably already felt the friction. On one side sits the scientific establishment, which tends to dismiss the entire conversation. On the other sits a spiritual marketplace that borrows quantum terminology without reading the physics, that calls anything energetically inconvenient a "low vibration," and that treats ancient wisdom as decorative branding rather than the serious philosophical tradition it is. And somewhere in the middle, you have been asking a question that neither side seems willing to hold with the care it deserves. “Did the ancient Hermeticists encode knowledge about the fundamental nature of reality that modern physics is only now rediscovering?” That is not a rhetorical question. It is the central question of this course. The seven Hermetic principles, codified in the Kybalion but tracing their lineage through the Corpus Hermeticum, medieval alchemy, Renaissance magic, and the legendary figure of Hermes Trismegistus, have persisted across millennia. Quantum mechanics, relativity, information theory, and cosmology have, in roughly one century, overturned nearly every assumption of the classical worldview. Whether these two traditions are converging on the same truth, speaking in useful analogy, or merely projecting similarity onto fundamentally different phenomena is a question this course takes seriously. You will not be told what to believe. You will be given the tools to find out for yourself.
Why This Course Is Different
Most courses in this space do one of two things. They cherry-pick quantum physics concepts to validate spiritual claims they wanted to make anyway, or they dismiss the philosophical implications of modern physics as irrelevant to inner life. This course does neither. What makes this inquiry genuinely rare is the methodology at its center: a three-level correspondence framework that allows you to rigorously distinguish between genuine isomorphism (where two traditions are describing the same underlying structure), deep analogy (where the parallel is illuminating but the mechanism differs), and false correspondence (where we are projecting similarity onto fundamentally unrelated phenomena). That skill alone, the ability to think precisely about correspondence without either dismissing or inflating them, is among the most valuable intellectual tools available to anyone navigating the territory between ancient wisdom and modern science. The Three-Level Correspondence Framework Level Category What it means Level 1 Genuine Isomorphism The same principle operating at different scales or domains, with structural identity that makes testable predictions. Level 2 Deep Analogy Analogous principles, different in mechanism but similar in pattern. Illuminating metaphor that generates insight without conflation. Level 3 False Correspondence Confirmation bias, equivocation, or semantic slippage. Projecting similarity onto fundamentally different phenomena.
What This Course Is, and What It Is Not
Positioning that is honest converts better than positioning that promises the world. So let us be direct. What This Course Is A rigorous examination of all seven Hermetic principles alongside quantum mechanics, relativity, information theory, and cosmology. An intellectually honest treatment that tells you when the correspondences break down, not just when they hold. A contemplative practice integrated with rigorous analysis, so the learning lands in the body, not just the intellect. A serious engagement with both the Corpus Hermeticum and peer-reviewed physics, held together without collapsing either. Training in one of the most valuable intellectual tools available: the ability to think precisely about correspondences. What This Course Is Not A "quantum spirituality" seminar that borrows physics vocabulary to validate predetermined conclusions. A promise that ancient wisdom proves modern physics or vice versa. A dry academic survey. The practices are real and the inquiry is alive. A watered-down version of either tradition. Both are treated with full depth and full respect. A course that will simply confirm everything you already believe. Your assumptions will be tested. So will everyone else's.
Who This Course Is For
The course serves two populations simultaneously: those grounded in science who sense that something deeper is going on, and those grounded in esoteric traditions who want to understand the actual physics rather than pop-science distortions. Both groups will be challenged. Both will be enriched. You will likely recognize yourself here: Scientifically Literate Seekers You have some science education and you are drawn to the Hermetic tradition, but you demand intellectual rigor and you refuse to abandon critical thinking to get there. You want real physics alongside real philosophy. Spiritually Curious Scientists You are a physicist, engineer, biologist, or science professional. You intuit that your discipline touches on deeper philosophical and metaphysical questions that the field rarely acknowledges. You want a framework that takes both seriously. Students of Hermeticism and the Western Mystery Tradition You have been working with the Hermetic principles in practice. You want to understand what modern physics says about the reality those principles describe, not the caricature that circulates in popular spiritual media. Philosophers of Mind and Consciousness You are exploring the hard problem of consciousness through both empirical and contemplative lenses. You want the deepest available frameworks from both directions, held in honest conversation with each other. Thoughtful General Inquirers You are intellectually curious and tired of both dogmatic materialism and uncritical New Age claims. You are looking for a middle path of genuine inquiry that does not require you to leave your intelligence at the door. Prerequisites: No formal background in science or philosophy is required. The course teaches all necessary physics concepts from the ground up. What is required: intellectual honesty, tolerance for ambiguity, and the willingness to hold multiple frameworks simultaneously without collapsing prematurely into certainty.
Meet James Sageman
James Sageman has been living inside this question for decades. He grew up in rural Vermont, where independence and honest work were not aspirational values but simply how people lived. He spent six years in the United States Navy aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, deployed to the Persian Gulf, before building a forty-year career in engineering and technical roles in and around Colorado Springs. Along the way, he pursued a quieter path: deep study and practice in alchemy, the Hermetic principles, meditation, shadow work, and the intersection of ancient wisdom with modern science. Through decades of dedicated inquiry, he arrived at what many traditions call self-realization. Not as a credential. As a living fact that shapes everything he teaches. He is the creator of The Great Work Platform, the author of The Great Work: A Guide to Personal and Collective Awakening, and the designer of courses on consciousness, Hermetic philosophy, and quantum metaphysics. He teaches the way he writes: plainly, honestly, and from the inside of the practice. Not from above it. “Consciousness is the foundation. Change consciousness, and you change everything.” James Sageman
The Sixteen-Week Curriculum
The course is organized into four parts across sixteen modules. Each build on the last. Together they form a complete arc: from the historical and philosophical foundations, through a rigorous module-by-module examination of each of the seven Hermetic principles alongside its physics counterpart, through advanced synthesis, and finally into integration, discernment, and your personal capstone. Part I: Foundations (Modules 0 and 1) Module 0 - Orientation: Two Rivers, One Ocean? An introduction to both traditions in full depth. The historical sweep of Hermeticism from Thoth and the Corpus Hermeticum through the Kybalion. The quantum revolution from Planck and Bohr through today's unresolved interpretive debates. The three-level correspondence framework that will guide the entire course. And a Beginner's Mind Inventory that asks you to honestly assess what you already believe and what might change your mind in either direction. Module 1 - The Historical Convergence: From Hermes to Heisenberg Did the founders of quantum physics draw on Hermetic and Eastern traditions? Niels Bohr adopted the yin-yang as his coat of arms. Werner Heisenberg corresponded with Rabindranath Tagore. Erwin Schrodinger wrote extensively on Vedanta. Wolfgang Pauli collaborated with C.G. Jung on synchronicity. Isaac Newton wrote one million words of alchemical manuscripts. This module traces the intellectual lineage and asks the harder question: does historical connection validate philosophical correspondence, or is it simply coincidence? Part II: The Seven Principles (Modules 2 through 8) One module per Hermetic law, each paired in depth with its physics counterpart. Every module follows the same rigorous structure: the Hermetic principle in its historical and philosophical depth, the relevant physics concepts, the three-level correspondence analysis, practices, and honest critical examination of where the parallel holds and where it breaks down. Module 2 - Mentalism: The All Is Mind The Principle of Mentalism and its encounter with the measurement problem, the observer effect, Wheeler's participatory universe, QBism, Integrated Information Theory, and analytic idealism. Does modern physics support the claim that the universe is fundamentally mental, and if so, what does mental mean at the quantum scale? Module 3 - Correspondence: As Above, So Below The most famous of all Hermetic axioms examined against fractal geometry, the holographic principle, the AdS/CFT correspondence, Emmy Noether's theorem, and structural parallels across scales from quarks to galaxy clusters. Where the pattern recurs because of genuine isomorphism, and where we are projecting similarity we want to find. Module 4 - Vibration: Nothing Rests; Everything Vibrates Quantum field theory, wave-particle duality, string theory, cymatics, zero-point energy, and the electromagnetic spectrum. The Hermetic principle that matter, energy, mind, and spirit are all vibration at different rates meets the physics finding that, at the quantum level, everything literally is vibration. Where the parallel is precise, where the vocabulary has been degraded by popular misuse, and why the distinction matters. Module 5 - Polarity: Everything Is Dual; Everything Has Poles Wave-particle duality, matter-antimatter, charge and spin, spacetime as a unified continuum, and E equals mc squared as the ultimate transmutation. Niels Bohr adopted the yin-yang specifically because of this correspondence. This module examines why, and what the genuine limits of the polarity principle are in both physics and philosophy. Module 6 - Rhythm: Everything Flows, Out and In Oscillation as the mathematical foundation of physics, cosmic cycles, thermodynamic cycles, Newton's Third Law as the Principle of Rhythm expressed in mechanics, and the challenge the Second Law of Thermodynamics poses to perfect compensation. The Hermetic claim that the pendulum swings measure for measure meets the reality of dissipation, entropy, and irreversible time. Module 7 - Cause and Effect: Every Cause Has Its Effect The most philosophically rich confrontation in the course: Hermetic determinism versus quantum indeterminism. Classical physics is the Principle of Cause and Effect expressed mathematically. But Bell's theorem, radioactive decay, and the violation of local hidden variable theories suggest that quantum randomness may be fundamental rather than epistemic. Chaos theory, synchronicity, retrocausation, and every major interpretation of quantum mechanics are examined honestly. Module 8 - Gender: Gender Is in Everything The most culturally sensitive of the seven principles, and the most misread. The module examines the principle as a statement about complementary creative polarities rather than biological essentialism: symmetry and symmetry breaking in the Standard Model, the Higgs mechanism, fermions and bosons, the Kabbalistic Chokmah and Binah, and the Daoist yin and yang. Where the physics structural parallel is genuine, and where the gendered vocabulary misleads. Part III: Advanced Synthesis (Modules 9 through 11) Module 9 - The Unified Field: Hermetic Unity and the Theory of Everything The scientific quest for a unified field theory from Maxwell through the Standard Model to string theory, loop quantum gravity, and the unresolved problem of quantum gravity. The Hermetic concept of The All as the ultimate unified reality from which everything manifests. Where these quests converge, where they diverge, and what Eugene Wigner called the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics at their intersection. Module 10 - Information, Consciousness, and the Fabric of Reality Is information more fundamental than matter and energy? From Claude Shannon's foundational theory through Rolf Landauer's physical information, John Wheeler's It from Bit, the holographic principle, Integrated Information Theory, and Donald Hoffman's conscious agent framework. If the universe is fundamentally informational, does that support the Hermetic Principle of Mentalism? This module traces the chain carefully and honestly. Module 11 - The Hard Problem, the Blind Spot, and the Limits of Both Paradigms What are the fundamental limitations of the scientific approach to reality? What are the fundamental limitations of the Hermetic approach? Science's founding move was to exclude the observer to study the observed. The result was extraordinary, and the cost was the exclusion of consciousness itself, the very thing that makes science possible. This module examines both traditions' blind spots and explores whether a genuine participatory epistemology might lie beyond both. Part IV: Integration and Capstone (Modules 12 and 13) Module 12 - Discernment, Pseudoscience, and the Ethics of Synthesis How do you distinguish legitimate correspondence from pseudoscientific appropriation? A taxonomy of the most common misuses: quantum name-dropping, the observer fallacy, the vibration fallacy, the entanglement fallacy. Case studies in the genre's failure modes. The Sagan Standard, Occam's Razor, falsifiability, Bayesian reasoning, and the steel-man principle. Your personal ethics of communicating these ideas to others. Module 13 - Capstone: Your Personal Synthesis After sixteen weeks of rigorous inquiry, where do you stand? The capstone is not a summary. It is a statement. Students choose among four formats: a synthetic essay examining at least five of the seven principles, a visual cartography mapping all seven with the three-level analysis, a complete teaching module designed for a general audience, or a Socratic dialogue between a physicist, a Hermetic philosopher, and a contemplative practitioner. Every capstone must include a Worldview Shift reflection comparing your Module 0 position with where you now stand. What You Will Be Able to Do These outcomes are concrete and verifiable. They are skills and capacities, not vague transformational promises. • Articulate the seven Hermetic principles with historical and philosophical accuracy, tracing their lineage from Egyptian and Greek sources through the Corpus Hermeticum, medieval alchemy, and the 1908 Kybalion. • Explain the core concepts of quantum mechanics, relativity, thermodynamics, information theory, and cosmology at a level sufficient for meaningful philosophical analysis. • Analyze proposed correspondences between Hermetic principles and modern physics using the three-level framework, providing evidence-based arguments for each classification. • Evaluate popular claims about quantum spirituality and distinguish legitimate philosophical implications from pseudoscientific appropriation. • Synthesize insights from both traditions into a personal philosophical framework regarding the nature of reality, consciousness, and their relationship. • Demonstrate critical thinking about the limits of both scientific materialism and esoteric traditionalism as complete accounts of reality. • Apply Hermetic-scientific correspondence as practical tools for understanding and navigating personal and collective transformation. • Create an original capstone work that communicates at least one Hermetic-physics correspondence to a general audience with intellectual integrity.

The Seven Commitments of This Course
Every serious inquiry has a code. This is ours. 1. Accuracy over Allure We never misrepresent physics to make a Hermetic correspondence more compelling. If physics does not support the parallel, we say so clearly. 2. Transparency about Uncertainty Every claim is explicitly categorized as established, supported, speculative, or unknown. The course does not weaponize ambiguity in either direction. 3. Respect for Both Traditions We do not reduce Hermeticism to a primitive precursor of physics, nor reduce physics to a limited version of Hermetic truth. Both are treated as full, serious intellectual traditions. 4. Intellectual Honesty about the Kybalion The Kybalion is likely a 1908 New Thought text, not an ancient Egyptian document. We acknowledge this directly while directing students to the Corpus Hermeticum for historical authenticity. The Kybalion's insights are evaluated on their merits, not on false claims of ancient provenance. 5. No Weaponization of Uncertainty Quantum indeterminacy does not mean anything goes. The uncertainty principle is not a philosophical blank check. 6. Inclusion and Accessibility The course is designed for people with no physics background. No one should feel excluded by mathematical intimidation. The equations are there for those who want them. The concepts are accessible to everyone. 7. The Primacy of Wonder While maintaining rigor, we never lose sight of the genuine awe at the heart of this inquiry. The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. Einstein said that. The Hermetic tradition built a civilization on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a science or philosophy background? No. The course teaches all necessary physics from the ground up, using accessible language, visual demonstrations, and experiential analogies. Mathematical expressions are presented conceptually, with optional deep-dive supplements for those who want the equations. What is required is intellectual honesty and tolerance for ambiguity. I am a hard skeptic. Will I feel out of place? You will feel at home. Rigorous skepticism is one of the four legitimate positions this course holds. A carefully argued conclusion that the correspondences are largely analogical rather than structural is as valid an outcome as a deep synthesis. The course's commitment is to honest inquiry, not to any predetermined conclusion. How much time does this course require each week? Plan on six to eight hours per week across sixteen weeks. Lectures, readings, guided practices, journaling, and the analytical framework exercises. Students who engage fully tend to report the most substantial shifts. Students who do less will still benefit. What do I receive when I enroll? Lifetime access to all sixteen module lessons, including lecture videos, expanded course guides, reading lists, analytical framework worksheets, guided practice audio, and the complete three-level correspondence toolkit. Self-experiment templates. Community forum access
The Great Work Is You
If you have read this far, something in you already knows. You know that the question sitting at the intersection of these two traditions is not a small one. Whether the ancient Hermeticists and the founders of quantum physics were converging on the same truth from different angles, whether the seven principles encode genuine insight about the structure of reality, whether the observer is as central to the physics as the Hermetic tradition always insisted the mind was to everything, these are among the most consequential questions a human being can sit with. You also know that most of the teaching available on this territory has been either too credulous or too dismissive. Too willing to collapse the uncertainty in the direction it was already leaning. This course does not do that. It holds the tension honestly, for sixteen weeks, with the tools to navigate it rigorously. “The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of understanding.” The Kybalion “Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it.” Niels Bohr Perhaps they are both pointing at the same thing. Perhaps not. The only honest response is to keep investigating. Sixteen modules. Forty years of study and practice distilled into a single living architecture of inquiry you can carry forward for the rest of your life. Your inner work is the most powerful thing you can do for the world. And the inner work of learning to think this clearly, this honestly, about the nature of reality itself, is among the most important work available to a human being in this century. The Great Work is here. The Great Work is now. And the Great Work is you. Welcome home. May you achieve all the abundance and joy you desire.
